The Gothic People´s Unity

"GTA", the Gutanisko Thiuda Ainitha, or Gothic People's Unity in Gothic language, is a political party that takes part in the elections to the regional council, the national Parliament, and in some city councils. We want to give Gotland a strong and permanent home rule within Sweden. This demands the right for Gotland to institute laws in several areas. Our party agrees on a open welcoming regionalism for everbody irrespective of their origin. The party is registered at the election office.

The Gothic People´s Unity looks positively at the future after our first election. The party, at the time six months old, got 200 votes in the regional election. This feat was achieved without a penny spent. The votes were evenly given over whole region, and we came out as the biggest of the smaller parties, in spite of the fact that we did not give that election any attention. The members of the party have now acquired new experience of election- and political party work and we look forward to the next election, that we expect to be our great breakthrough.

Who are the Gothic Autonomists?
The GTA is a group of people who think Gotland should have regional homerule within Sweden, based on the principles of federalism. We fight for a series of questions concerning culture, education, integration with Sweden, homerule and democracy. We demand that the Swedish constitution permanents the temporary scanian homerule.

Our party has some 50 members and three more or less organized local departments. We were founded in march 2002 by a couple of long time Gotlandic homerule and cultural activists. The party has no ties to any other gottish organization.

What we strives for
The Gottish homerule must be granted by the constitution of Sweden, with a regional constitution and the right to institute laws. Much of the power of the national parliament should be passed over to the regional Gottish council.
Gotland is firstly a part of Europe. All decisions concerning Gotland hould reflect that Gotland is a part of the Scandinavian region, the southern Baltic Sea region and a part of the regional Europe. The party is positive towards European integration.
The Scandinavian region should be borderless, as if it was one country. The Swedish-European border must be transparent. Two free (as in costless) infrastructure connections (bridges or tunnels) should cross the sound Island.
Pluralism in culture should be encouraged. All cultures is an asset to Gotland, not only regional and local scandinavian cultures, but also cultures from far away.
Old Gottish culture, language and history strengthens the identity. Gottish culture means both traditional culture and newer everyday mixtures.
Massmedium and organizations benefits from being regional or local. Decisions concerning TV and publicly supported organizations should be made regarding to local and regional demands and needs.
Person elections, citizen initiated referendum and true local democracy should be introduced. No referendum should be advisory, as they are today in Sweden.
